Acoustic sensing is the missing modality
Bowel sounds are a mechanical fingerprint of digestion. Frequency, timing, and pattern encode motility, gas transit, and inflammation. UCLA's AbStats clinical device is FDA-cleared for exactly this: microphones counting intestinal contractions to inform care.
Until now this only worked in silent labs. Motion artefact and ambient noise made continuous consumer-grade sensing impossible. That barrier has finally been broken.
What's new — hardware
The Bosch BMI570 is the first body-sound MEMS microphone small and efficient enough for a continuous wearable patch. It filters vibration and classifies sound on-chip. Paired with the BMA580 bone-conduction wake trigger, the processor only activates on relevant events — delivering seven days of battery life on a thumbnail of silicon.
What's new — intelligence
The BHI360 runs the sensor-fusion model on-device. No raw audio ever leaves the patch. What comes off it are classified gut-state labels — privacy by hardware design, not policy.
